The shagbark hickory (Carya ovata) tree produces a sweet, edible nut that tastes like a pecan. (In fact, hickories are related to pecans.) Shagbark hickory nuts were an important food source for many indigenous people throughout the region, and they continue to be important to a wide variety of woodland animals. Shagbark hickory wood is hard, dense, fibrous, and shock resistant, making it ideal for firewood and tool handles.
