Embedded in this tree is wire fencing. Near the base of the tree is evidence of an old rock wall. These relics reveal land use history of South Hill. Before this land was owned by Ithaca College it was used as farmland and pastureland by the settlers in the area. As time went on, rock walls were eventually replaced with wire fencing, and later by barbed wire.
